Photography and Asian Diaspora in the Americas is co-organized by the Center for Creative Photography in collaboration with the School of Art. The symposium, held at the CCP auditorium, explores the historical trajectories, cultural productions, political mobilizations, and social realities of Asian diasporic communities across the Americas.
Saturday, April 26: The first day of the symposium features two panel discussions and a keynote speech by Osamu James Nakagawa, Distinguished Professor at Indiana University. Additional speakers include Mia Liu (Assistant Professor, Johns Hopkins University), Stephanie Tung (Byrne Family Curator of Photography, Peabody Essex Museum), Boyoung Chang (Assistant Professor, University of Alberta), Hamin Kim (PhD Student, Boston University), Thy Phu (Distinguished Professor, University of Toronto), Elena Tajima Creef (Professor, Wellesley College), Qiang Hu (PhD Student, UC San Diego), María Beatriz H. Carrión (PhD Candidate, CUNY The Graduate Center & Assistant Curator of Photographs, Amon Carter Museum of American Art), and Yechen Zhao (Assistant Curator of Photography, Art Institute of Chicago). The day also includes a special session with the Chinese Chorizo project.
Sunday, April 27: The final day includes a panel discussion featuring Pok Chi Lau, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Susan Sponsler-Carstarphen, and Brian Van Lau, moderated by Jeehey Kim, Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona.
