Research Assistance

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) is the premier research collection of American photographic fine art and archives, promoting creative inquiry, dialogue, study and appreciation of photography’s enduring cultural influence. We are dedicated to expanding the history of photography and deepening an understanding of the medium. CCP holds an invaluable selection of archives, rare books and reference materials, and oral histories, all for use within the Volkerding Study Center.

Reference Services

While we continue to navigate the uncertainties of COVID-19, CCP staff are working hard to provide timely research and remote reference services. Throughout this time, we have had limited access to physical collections and continue to work through a significant backlog of reference requests. We process requests in the order they are received, and we kindly ask for your patience. Submit your questions and requests to our reference queue via the form below or directly to CCP-RefDesk@email.arizona.edu. Please note that phone calls and direct messages will also be forwarded to this queue for the sake of an equitable process.

Summer 2022 Closure

The Volkerding Study Center will be closed to in-person research from June 21 - August 13, 2022 for a summer recess. Remote reference services will be limited during this time as well, but we look forward to welcoming you before or after this closure.

Reference Digitization

CCP is able to provide low-resolution digital reference images from our archives for research use. To request reference images or ask questions about this service, please fill out the Research and Reference Assistance Request Form, below. Turn around time for requests is generally about a month; larger requests may take longer.

Imaging for Publication

Should you wish to publish any images from the Center for Creative Photography (CCP), CCP owns or manages the copyright for many photographers. Our Image Services and Copyright Management Department works with educators, scholars, museums, and publishers worldwide on licensing for these works, and provides reproduction image files and services for the Center's collections.

Please visit our Services for Publishers page for information on how to request permissions and/or reproductions for publication of works from our collection. From there, you can review our Conditions for General Use, and complete the appropriate publication request form.

Virtual Reference

CCP staff are able to host free virtual reference sessions to help with research and/or to share content from the archives over Zoom. These sessions might be useful if you need:

  • to decide what you would like to have digitized for personal research
  • to decide what you would like to have digitized for publication
  • to decide if a trip to visit CCP's archives might be useful
  • assistance in using CCP's collections for research

Scheduling

If you would like to try a remote reference session, please schedule an appointment with an archivist.

If you would like to view content from the archives during your virtual reference appointment, please also complete our Request Form. You may request one box for each virtual reference appointment. Information about finding things in CCP's archives can be found in our Guide to Searching the Collections.
