In conjunction with our exhibition Longer Ways to Go: Photographs of the American Road, the Center is excited to welcome road food experts Jane and Michael Stern for an evening of conversation about eating along the road.

For hungry travelers and adventurous food lovers, Jane and Michael Stern have been trusted, trailblazing guides for over 40 years. After meeting at Yale, where they came to study art, they began a collaboration that has yielded over forty books, including the good-eats guide Roadfood, now in it’s 10th edition.

The Sterns have won three James Beard journalism awards for their monthly column in Gourmet magazine, which took readers to the best restaurants in small towns and cities all around the country. As the creators of Roadfood, the award-winning authors have worked to both preserve and celebrate regional American dishes from coast-to-coast.

Jane currently lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut with her beloved dogs Ivy and Cecil. She is a frequent contributor to The Paris Review, Connecticut Post, The New Yorker, and other publications.  She writes the popular newsletter series Jane's Diary, as well as reviews for Roadfood.com. When she's not busy writing, you can find her volunteering as an EMT or reading tarot cards. Michael now lives in Aiken, South Carolina, where he enjoys shrimp & grits, whole-hog BBQ, fresh peaches, and buttermilk pie. He continues to manage the editorial content for Roadfood.com, write reviews, and travel the country looking for great places to eat.
