In conjunction with our exhibition Longer Ways to Go: Photographs of the American Road, the Center is excited to welcome road food experts Jane and Michael Stern for an evening of conversation about eating along the road.

For hungry travelers and adventurous food lovers, Jane and Michael Stern have been trusted, trailblazing guides for over 40 years. After meeting at Yale, where they came to study art, they began a collaboration that has yielded over forty books, including the good-eats guide Roadfood, now in it’s 10th edition.

The Sterns have won three James Beard journalism awards for their monthly column in Gourmet magazine, which took readers to the best restaurants in small towns and cities all around the country. As the creators of Roadfood, the award-winning authors have worked to both preserve and celebrate regional American dishes from coast-to-coast.

Jane currently lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut with her beloved dogs Ivy and Cecil. She is a frequent contributor to The Paris Review, Connecticut Post, The New Yorker, and other publications.  She writes the popular newsletter series Jane's Diary, as well as reviews for Roadfood.com. When she's not busy writing, you can find her volunteering as an EMT or reading tarot cards. Michael now lives in Aiken, South Carolina, where he enjoys shrimp & grits, whole-hog BBQ, fresh peaches, and buttermilk pie. He continues to manage the editorial content for Roadfood.com, write reviews, and travel the country looking for great places to eat.

Road Food Adventure with Jane and Michael Stern: October 27, 2018, 11:00am
Join Jane and Michael Stern for a trip to one of their favorite spots in Tucson! This CCP Roadtrip will give you the opportunity to dive a little deeper into conversation with these food experts as well as offer you a chance to get to know what makes Tucson UNESCO's first City of Gastronomy in the U.S. This event is open to non-members with special pricing for CCP Members. Join the Center for Creative Photography and the Hanson Film TV Institute for a new film series featuring independent female directors!

The first film in the series is Border Radio, with a special appearance by director Allison Anders.

Before carving out a niche as one of the most distinct voices in nineties American cinema, Allison Anders made her debut, alongside co-directors and fellow UCLA film school students Kurt Voss and Dean Lent, with 1987’s Border Radio. A low-key, semi-improvised postpunk diary that took four years to complete, Border Radio features legendary rocker Chris D., of the Flesh Eaters, as a singer/songwriter who has stolen loot from a club and gone missing, leaving his wife (Luanna Anders), a no-nonsense rock journalist, to track him down with the help of his friends (John Doe of the band X; Chris Shearer). With its sprawling Southern Californian and Mexican landscapes, captured in evocative 16mm black and white, Border Radio is a singular, DIY memento of the indie film explosion in America. When

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 30, 2018

In celebration of Women's History Month, join us for an art + feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon!

This event is designed to improve coverage of gender, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia. The edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials, and refreshments. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, particularly transgender and cisgender women.

In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as women. This lack of inclusive participation has led to an alarming gap of content in the world’s most popular online research tool. Art+Feminism’s Edit-a-thons and other initiatives make an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements to gender, feminism and art related subjects on Wikipedia. Since 2014, Art+Feminism edit-a-thons have taken place across the world, creating and improving over 11,000 articles.

CCP’s Art+Feminism’s Edit-a-thon will focus on increasing the presence of female photographers on Wikipedia. Part of CCP’s mission is to promote creative inquiry, dialogue, and appreciation of photography’s enduring cultural influence, but people don’t always begin their searches for photographers on our website. There are at least 14 female photographers with archives at CCP who do not currently have Wikipedia pages. Join us in expanding the presence of these photographers on the internet and become a Wikipedia editor this March!
